History

St.Mary Church is known as "The Oldest Polish Parish in Indiana" and was established in 1873.  In 1877 plans for the cemetery behind the church were made.  The first resident pastor was Father Peter Koncz.  In 1917, fire destroyed the church and the rectory. Mass was celebrated in the school building until the present church was built in 1918 and a new rectory was completed in 1922.  The parish's school operated until 1965. In 1953 a small Parish Hall was built on the grounds.  Although the parish school closed, St. Mary Church continued to provide religious education to its children and in 1989 a large parish hall was constructed and the building was dedicated on February 18th, 1990 by Bishop Gaughan.
